How He loves us {and a giveaway}

The Dude and I have been together {including dating} for almost ten years. Sounds like a long time, feels short. For those of you with several small children at home you know how hard it is to get out for a date. A few months ago we heard that our favorite band was breaking up and they would be starting their final tour this year. We knew we had to go. The David Crowder Band has in a sence been the flagship band of our relationship. They played backup for Bebo Norman at the first concert the Dude and I went to together. The second time we saw them live was in college at Oklahoma State. The third time was shortly after we got married in Tulsa. We have a six cd changer in our van. Five of the cds are kid songs, the one "grown-up" cd is by The David Crowder Band, Church Music.

 They have always been extremely entertaining, the man is hilarious, the band is talented. They are musically the most creative people I have ever come across. This final concert did not disappoint. It was a bittersweet culmination of everything I love about this band.

I love how going to a concert gets me excited for that band all over again. As I was listening to Church Music for the hundredth time this week I was struck by how much they sing about God's love for us. Here are the lyrics to How He Loves:

  • Songwriters: John Mark Mcmillan

And He is jealous from me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions Eclipsed by glory and I realize just how beautiful You are And how great Your affections are for me

And oh, how He loves us, oh Oh, how He loves us, how He loves us all

And He is jealous from me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions Eclipsed by glory and I realize just how beautiful You are And how great Your affections are for me

Oh, how He loves, yeah, He loves us Oh, how He loves us, oh, how He loves us Oh, how He loves

And we are His portion and He is our prize Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes If His grace is an ocean, we're all sinking

And heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss And my heart turns violently inside of my chest I don't have time to maintain these regrets When I think about the way

Oh, how He loves us, oh Oh, how He loves us, how He loves all How He loves

Yeah, He loves us, oh, how He loves us Oh, how He loves us, oh how He loves Oh, I love

Yeah, He loves us, yeah, He loves us How He loves us, oh, how He loves us all

*emphasis mine

I am attending a Bible study at church on Tuesday mornings. We are studying Elise Fitzpatrick's book Because He Loves Me. We are four chapters in and so far she has been painstakingly trying to remind us of God's unfathomable love for us in the truth of the gospel. Having been a believer in Jesus, and the gospel, for most of my life, sometimes the idea of God's love for me grows stale. This song and this book have reminded me of the glorious truth that God loves me. Really loves me. The Bible says he does not count my trespasses against me, that he traded his perfect son in for me. He made Jesus unrighteous so that I can be righteous before God {2 Corinthians 5:17-21}. And he did all this so that I could be close to God {1 Peter 3:8}. This is a love I don't understand. When I really sit down to think about it I cannot for the life of me think of one reason God would love me like this. I have nothing to offer him. Even at my best I am no good. Praise God that he worked it out through Jesus dying on the cross that his perfect record would be what God sees when He looks at me! I get it Dave Crowder. I get why you sing so much about God's love. It is astounding, surprising, incomparable. It has implications that reach down to the most mundane details of my day. As the song said, when I think about this love I can't maintain regrets, I am unaware of afflictions. All I can do is wonder at the amazing love God shows me.
